Whether speaking on a secular topic or reading from the platform in a Christian Science church service, the substance of effective communication is an understanding of the subject. One of the reasons that Biblical theater opens up the meaning of the Bible so expansively is because it requires memorization. Not only is it easier to remember something if one understands it, but the demand to bring forth memorized text into a performance requires a deeper understanding and, to some extent, a taking of the text to heart.
